History

Floyd Red Crow Westerman was a renaissance man with many talents, dedication and passion. A member of the Dakota (Sioux) nation, he was an accomplished actor on the big and small screen for over 20 years. A political advocate for Indian and environmental causes worldwide, and popular singer/songwriter, Floyd Red Crow Westerman servers as the guiding spirit for Red Crow Cannabis.

Red Crow’s life was a microcosm of the Native American Experience in the 20th century from the very beginning.

At the age of five he was taken from his family and forced to attend U.S. Government Native American boarding schools where they weren't allowed to speak their language and were forced to cut their hair and wear western clothing.

He remained in boarding school until graduating high school from the Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota and then majored in art, and speech & theatre, at Northern State University in South Dakota.

After graduating, he embarked on a successful pursuit in social and environmental activism.

His advocacy work includes the American Indian Movement, the 1977 Tour Against Nuclear Arms with Harry Belafonte, touring with Sting to publicize the decimation of rain forests and their residents, testifying at the World Uranium Hearing in Salzburg in 1992 and serving as founder and executive director of the Eyapaha Institute, a non-profit corporation devoted to addressing racism, discrimination, depredation and genocide of indigenous peoples throughout the world.
